When you think of the most likable figures in pop culture history, both Tom Hanks and Mr. Rogers would have to be near the top. And now you’ll be able to see them together…sort of.
It was announced yesterday that Hanks is set to play Mr. Rogers in an upcoming biopic called, You Are My Friend. The movie is about Rogers, the beloved children’s entertainer, meeting journalist Tom Junod who’s been assigned to write a profile about him. While Junod initially doesn’t want the assignment, his relationship with Rogers leads him to change his perspective on life.
“Now more than ever, we all need a re-introduction to Fred Rogers’ message of uncompromising love and kindness between all living things. Mari Heller is the perfect visionary filmmaker to bring Noah and Micah’s script to life and because of her vision and this remarkable script, we have the quintessential actor to play Fred Rogers,” said the movie’s producers.
Picking Hanks to play Mr. Rogers seems pretty appropriate. He’s both an excellent actor and seemingly one of the few people in Hollywood, or perhaps the whole world, that everyone seems to like. So who could be better to play the great Mr. Rogers?
The only question is how many Oscars will this film eventually win.
