Every year the Library of Congress selects a number of films to add to the National Film Registry, indicating that those movies are culturally relevant, important and deserving of recognition from future generations. And with 2017 drawing to a close, the Library of Congress has announced the 25 movies it will add to the Registry this year. And there’s only one word to describe this list: Yippee-Ki-Yay.
Everyone’s favorite action movie (or Christmas movie, depending on how you look at it) Die Hard has made the list this year. Joining John McClane will be the ill-fated lovers Jack and Rose from the 1997 blockbuster Titanic as well as the 1980’s classic The Goonies.
Of the 25 movies, only one was released in the 21st century, the mystery film Memento directed by Christopher Nolan. Meanwhile, the oldest movie on the list is over 100 years old as 1905’s Interior New York Subway, 14th Street to 42nd Street made it into the Registry. That last one sounds a little less exciting than Die Hard.
Some other notable movies added to the Registry this year include Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, the original Superman movie from 1978, Field of Dreams and the classic cartoon Dumbo.
So this list will include an R-rated movie about a shirtless Bruce Willis killing criminals in a Los Angeles skyscraper, a movie about the most famous sunk ship in history, a movie about a guy who builds a baseball field that resurrects the dead and a mystery movie about a guy with amnesia who’s trying to solve his wife’s murder. Did they have to pick so many similar movies?
Here is the total list of films making it into the Registry:
