2017 was a great year for movies. There were widely acclaimed superhero blockbusters in Wonder Woman and Logan, one of the best horror movies in years in Get Out and plenty of other movies audiences loved to see. But what film was the most rented movie of the year? Well, you’d probably never guess.
For the first time ever the Motion Picture Association of America released details on the most rented movies of the year for 2017. And the results were pretty surprising, as they revealed that the most rented movie of 2017 was The Accountant.
The Accountant was a 2016 movie starring Ben Affleck as an accountant in a small-town who secretly launders money for criminal organizations who gets caught in a tricky situation when a Treasury agent (played by J.K. Simmons) begins investigating him. It’s a middle-of-the-road thriller that wasn’t super critically acclaimed and didn’t make a huge splash at the box office. But apparently people were just really interested in renting the movie, not seeing it in theaters.
The Accountant ended up beating out popular Disney film Moana and Wonder Woman for the most rented movie of the year.
Turns out even in the age of Netflix and streaming services, movie rentals are still big business, particularly digital rentals. Last year Americans spent $13.7 billion on digital rentals, up 20 percent from 2016 and 110 percent from 2013.
