When you think about the Hunchback of Notre Dame, you probably imagine the odd-looking fellow from the Disney cartoon movie. But apparently Quasimodo’s about to get a lot more handsome.
Idris Elba is set to direct a modern re-telling of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix. But not only is Elba directing the movie, he will also be starring in the movie as the titular hunchback. Elba will also produce original music for the movie.
Now while the Disney version of Quasimodo may not be the most unappealing creature imaginable, that is not the case in Hugo’s novel. Hugo describes his Quasimodo as “hideous” and a “creation of the devil.” So it’s definitely within reason to question how Idris Elba, who is objectively a very handsome man, will be able to pull off Quasimodo.
We’re guessing this movie will require a very heavy makeup budget.
It will also be interesting to see how Elba and Netflix decide to modernize the story. Hugo’s novel is the peak of Romantic art and is basically a celebration of those themes.
Also, it’s pretty unlikely a hunchback is still living inside Notre Dame.
