Movie franchises are the backbone of the summer blockbuster season. And while everyone has their own favorite film series, is there one that stands out above the rest?
Mental Floss put together a list of the 10 highest grossing movie franchises ever. You an probably guess some of them, but the order may surprise you. Here’s the list:
10. Pirates of the Caribbean
Box office gross: $4,505,013,091
Box office gross: $4,572,000,197
Box office gross: $4,858,770,389
Box office gross: $5,016,911,347
6. Fast and the Furious
Box office gross: $5,139,434,105
5. Lord of the Rings
Box office gross: $5,895,804,182
4. James Bond
Box office gross: $7,077,929,291
3. Harry Potter
Box office gross: $8,532,684,345
2. Star Wars
Box office gross: $8,926,689,927
1. Marvel Cinematic Universe
Box office gross: $13,508,505,227
Now, there are definitely some qualifications for this list. Obviously, putting the Marvel Cinematic Universe in one category is going to inflate its total because we’re counting all the Iron Man, Avengers, Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy and all the other franchises in the universe under one umbrella. If we were to do the same with the DC cinematic universe, that would probably rank a lot higher than the ninth place the Batman movies received on their own.
Also, these box office totals are not adjusted for inflation. If they were, Star Wars would possibly be number one considering the original trilogy set huge numbers for its era. A New Hope is the third highest grossing film of all time when adjusted for inflation, for instance.
And the fact that Disney owns the rights to the top two franchises on this list is pretty impressive.
