Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight is not just the greatest performance ever in a superhero but also an all-time great film role. And it turns out he was hoping to come back for more.
In a recent interview, Ledger’s sister Kate talked about her brother’s fondness for making The Dark Knight and revealed that he really wanted to come back for a sequel.
“He was so proud of what he had done in Batman. And I know he had plans for another Batman,” Kate Ledger said. “He loved working with Chris Nolan and Christian Bale and Gary Oldman. He just had the best time ever doing that film. When he came home at Christmas he couldn’t wait to tell us about it and he was doing the voice and laughing, showing me all the rushes. We had a great time.”
Ledger passed away prior to the movie coming out in theaters and later won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor posthumously.
At the end of The Dark Knight, Batman catches the Joker, but the maniacal villain implies that this is just the beginning of their adventures. Director Christopher Nolan refused to re-cast the Joker for The Dark Knight Rises and decided not to make any mention of the character either.
Since Ledger passed away before any production could begin on The Dark Knight Rises, it’s not known if Nolan planned to bring the Joker back in the third film. But we know if he did, it would’ve been amazing.
