There has been much speculation over the past year about whether It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia would lose cast member Glenn Howerton for the shows next two seasons. But now it appears that may not be the case.
At a panel for the Television Critics Association, Howerton told the press that he “has not officially left” It’s Always Sunny. At the end of the most recent season, his character Dennis Reynolds left the Gang of Paddy’s Pub and seemed to be leaving the show. Then the show announced it would be going on a longer hiatus than normal before the next season, leaving many to speculate that it was due to Howerton possibly leaving the show.
Howerton said that joining his new TV show, A.P. Bio on NBC, was not a sign that he would no longer be playing Dennis Reynolds, but rather a new challenge for him to embark upon.
“I hope people will understand that,” Howerton said. “This is just a totally separate project. Look I mean, I hope people — I think one of the tough things about doing a show for 12 years is people might have a hard time seeing you as anything else. Um, I realize that, that could be a little bit of a struggle for me as an actor. But that’s why it was important for me to get to do something with someone who has a distinctive voice, like Mike.”
Howerton also said it would be totally feasible for him to filming both shows into his schedule. His It’s Always Sunny co-star Kaitlin Olson also appears on a network TV show, The Mick on Fox, when not shooting the FXX comedy.
However, Howerton didn’t definitively state he would be coming back to the show. However, we do know FX has renewed the show for two more seasons. So the Gang will be back, but it’s still unknown whether the Golden God will be joining them.
