George Clooney Says ‘Batman & Robin’ Was His Career Wake Up Call

Batman & Robin is largely considered to be the worst Batman movie, and possibly worst superhero movie of all time. But apparently the movie was so bad it helped George Clooney rethink his career.

Clooney gave an interview to the Hollywood Reporter to talk about his upcoming American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award. At the beginning of the interview, Clooney was asked what movie he made had the biggest impact on his career. He replied Batman & Robin because it forced him to finally take himself seriously.

“Up until that moment, I was an actor only concerned with finding work,” Clooney said about his career before Batman & Robin. “After the failure of that film creatively, I understood that I needed to take control of the films I made, not just the role. My next three films were Out of Sight, Three Kings and O Brother, Where Art Thou?”

Batman & Robin was the fourth Batman movie, and the second one made by director Joel Schumacher. The movie was reviewed harshly by critics when it came out for its constant lame jokes. The movie basically killed the Batman movie franchise until Christopher Nolan revived it with Batman Begins in 2005, eight years after Batman & Robin.

It’s also famous as the movie that introduced nipples to Batman and Robin’s costumes.

Clooney went on to win an Academy Award, Golden Globes and several other awards in his career.

And it was apparently all thanks to Batman & Robin!
