Game of Thrones is currently filming the final season of the acclaimed HBO series. But it turns out there may still be more adventures from Westeros coming to television after the show ends.
HBO’s original programming president Casey Bloys said in an interview that a spinoff of Game of Thrones could air as soon as 2020. The final season of Thrones will air in 2019, at which point the premium cable network would decide whether or not to pursue any spinoffs.
Currently, HBO has begun exploring as many as five different spinoffs related to Game of Thrones and the novels written by George R.R. Martin. While Bloys didn’t say any of the projects are necessarily close to beginning and there aren’t any favorites at the moment, he says he’s encouraged by what he’s seen.
“They didn’t start at the same startlines, so we’re at different stages, but I’m very encouraged by what we’ve seen. I don’t have a timetable when we’re going to make decisions on anything. I could make between zero and five. Probably more likely around one,” Bloys told IndieWire.
Of course, fans have speculated about what possible spinoffs HBO could be pursuing. An obvious one would be a Robert’s Rebellion, considering many characters from the current show are involved in those events, including Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark, Jaime Lannister and several others. There’s also Aegon’s Conquest and the creation of the Iron Throne, which would also make for exciting television, especially now that HBO’s figured out how to make awesome dragon combat as shown in the most recent season of Game of Thrones.
But for now, Bloys said the focus is on making the final season of Game of Thrones as great as it could possibly be and send the show off on a high note.
But seriously, a Robert’s Rebellion miniseries would be pretty freaking awesome.
