The Walking Dead is mostly known for killing off its cast members. But next season, one of the show’s most memorable characters is actually coming back.
Jon Bernthal, who played Shane Walsh in the first two seasons of The Walking Dead, will return to the show next season. For those who don’t remember, Shane was Rick Grimes’ partner who also had a fling with Rick’s wife on the show. At the end of the second season, Grimes was forced to kill his friend, who later came back as a zombie only to be killed once again by Grimes’ son, Carl.
So considering Shane’s fate on the show, it’s almost certain that he will be returning in either a flashback or hallucination scene. The show has featured similar scenes for deceased characters in the past.
The announcement is also interesting as it relates to two other long-standing characters on the show who will be leaving soon. Grimes’ actor, Andrew Lincoln, will be leaving at some point during the next season, as will Maggie Greene actress Lauren Cohan. It’s not clear how the show will handle those two characters’ exits, as both of those characters are still alive and present in the comic books that the show is based on.
Maybe The Walking Dead will invent some sort of resurrection machine that bring Shane back to life. It honestly wouldn’t be the most ridiculous thing the show has ever done.
