Ewan McGregor to Play Danny Torrance in a Sequel to ‘The Shining’

The Shining is considered not only one of the best horror movies ever, but one of the best films period. But now the Stanley Kubrick classic is getting a sequel starring Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Ewan McGregor will star as Danny Torrance in Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining. For those who don’t remember, Danny is the little boy in The Shining whose father goes crazy while staying at a remote mountain lodge.

Doctor Sleep, like The Shining, is based off a novel by Stephen King. In the sequel, Danny is an adult still coping with the memories of the Overlook Hotel and his father’s violent rampage. Danny becomes a reflection of his father, displaying much of the older man’s rage and alcoholism, until he decides to become sober and help people with his “Shining” powers. He ends up becoming embroiled with a group of people with similar powers.

According to Variety, King approved the casting of McGregor as Danny Torrance in the new movie. This marks a departure from the original Shining, where King asked Kubrick to re-consider casting Jack Nicholson as the father, Jack Torrance. In fact, King has repeatedly criticized The Shining for diverging from his novel in a number of ways, despite the fact that it’s almost certainly the most well-received movie based off his work besides possibly The Shawshank Redemption.

Let’s just hope this movie is more The Shining and less Dark Tower.
