Solo: A Star Wars Story came out this weekend, and fans are excited to see the origins of one of cinema’s most iconic characters. But it turns out one of the most iconic musicians in history influenced part of the movie.
Lawrence Kasdan, the screenwriter of Empire Strikes Back and Solo, and his son Jonathan discussed the new movie with Uproxx. Without getting into spoilers, there are some mentions of Solo’s father in the new movie, and it’s clear that Han had a troubled relationship with him. The Kasdans said the inspiration for Han’s relationship with his father was none other than Bruce Springsteen.
“We had both read Springsteen’s biography right around when we were working on it,” says Jonathan. “It’s amazing. And we were touched by his relationship with his father. And we thought that it was a different kind of attitude to have about a parent than we’ve seen in Star Wars. And we thought that would be cool.”
Anyone who knows anything about Springsteen probably knows he had a fraught relationship with his father who didn’t necessarily approve of the rocker’s life and choices at a young age. But there were also moments of closeness between the two.
Apparently the Kasdans used the template of that relationship to create the bond between Han and his father.
Of course, we know Han ended up having an even more fraught and problematic history with his own son, but that’s a different story.
