Bruce Springsteen is one of the most iconic American musicians of all time, and now you’ll have a chance to own the original lyrics to one of his best known songs.
Sotheby’s is auctioning off the original handwritten lyrics to Springsteen’s hit song “Born to Run.” The song is largely credit for helping Springsteen break into mainstream rock stardom, and part of the reason the album that shares its name has gone platinum six times.
The handwritten lyrics include some phrases people will recognize from the final version, such as the “Baby, we were born to run,” chorus. But many of the verses are slightly different from the song we all know today.
Now, it will cost you a pretty penny to own these lyrics. The opening bid for the auction is $160,000, and the estimated final price is between $200,000 and $300,000.
But, if you have a little bit of cash you’re willing to part with, Sotheby’s is also auctioning off handwritten lyrics for two other Sprinsgteen songs: “Darkness on the Edge of Town” and “Thunder Road.” “Darkness” is expected to auction off for between $30,000 and $50,000 while “Thunder Road” is expected to go for only between $8,000 and $12,000.
Sure, they may not be as big of hits as “Born to Run.” But they’re still pretty darn good songs, and you won’t have to sell your house to get them.
