Here’s How Arnold Schwarzenegger Tricked Sylvester Stallone to Make a Movie He Didn’t Like

Recently, we told you a story about how Arnold Schwarzenegger tricked Jesse Ventura into making a bet about who had the bigger arm muscles. But it appears Schwarzenegger played a much more nefarious trick on fellow action star Sylvester Stallone.

In the early 1990’s, Schwarzenegger read a script for the movie Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, a buddy cop movie about a police officer teaming up with his mother. Schwarzenegger apparently hated the script. Here’s what he’s quoted as saying about it:

“I read the script. It was so bad. You know, I’ve also done some movies that went right in the toilet, right? That were bad. But this was really bad.”

But Schwarzenegger decided instead of just turning down the movie, he’d have a little fun. The actor knew if he asked the studio for money to make the movie, they would most likely go to Sylvester Stallone, his semi-rival at the box office, and see if he would do the movie for less than Arnold. Schwarzenegger also knew if Stallone thought Arnold was interested in doing the movie, he would jump at the opportunity, and be forced to star in this terrible movie.

And he was right! Schwarzenegger asked for more money, the studio went to Stallone and offered him the part instead and he took it! Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot ended up getting trashed by critics when it came out in 1992, and made very little money compared to other recent Stallone movies. And don’t think Stallone doesn’t regret it either. In the years since the movie came out, he’s called it the worst movie he’s ever made and “maybe one of the worst movies in the entire solar system.”

That’s just more of that ingenuity that got Schwarzenegger into the California governor’s mansion!
