Let’s face it, 2017 wasn’t a great year for movies. Sure, Get Out and Lady Bird and a few other movies received rave reviews from critics and audiences, but there doesn’t seem to be a deep bench of great films that we’ll back on in 10 years and think, “Oh wow, can you believe how many classics came out in 2017?”
But will 2018 be any better? It’s too early to tell, but here are 10 movies that definitely make us hopeful.
10. Mission Impossible 6
The Mission Impossible movies are secretly one of the best action franchises around. They’re always well-made and feature Tom Cruise doing absolutely ridiculous stunts. You know there’s going to be some crazy stuff in the new one coming out this year.
9. Holmes and Watson
Sherlock Holmes and John Watson played by…Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. Do we really need to say more?
8. Ready Player One
Ready Player One was a best-selling novel that incorporated tons of pop culture references into an epic sci-fi story. Many people were somewhat worried about what a film adaptation of the book would look like, but then it was announced Steven Spielberg would be directing. So now the only question is how amazing will it be?
7. Deadpool 2
The original Deadpool changed the game when it comes to superhero movies. It was more violent, more funny and far more inappropriate than any other comic book movie yet. So you know they’re just going to crank it up again in the sequel.
6. Solo: A Star Wars Story
This May, Disney’s scheduled the release of the Han Solo standalone movie, called Solo. Not much is known about the plot of the prequel, and there are some concerns after the studio switched directors mid-filming. But it’s still a movie about the origins of one of the most iconic characters in film history, so you know Disney’s going to make sure it doesn’t disappoint.
5. Black Panther
There are many reasons to be excited about Black Panther, which comes out in only one month. One is Marvel’s commitment to making a diverse cast for the movie. Another is providing a more in-depth exploration of one of comic’s most underrated heroes. And another is this is the final Marvel film before the release of Avengers: Infinity War, so this will be the final piece before the ultimate team-up begins.
4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Hey, not everything’s about superheroes and Jedi nowadays! There’s still plenty of room for dinosaurs! The sequel to Jurassic World, Jurassic: Fallen Kingdom will look to expand everything about the previous movie into a bigger, more awesome experience.
3. Sicario 2: Soldado
Sicario is an unusual movie to receive a sequel considering it made less than $100 million at the box office. And yet anyone who saw it knows it was an incredibly unique and well-told crime movie that felt more connected to reality than any other in recent memory. And while the sequel will not be directed Denis Villeneuve, it still looks to be very much in the same fashion as the original.
2. Incredibles 2
It’s been over 13 years since the original Incredibles released, and yet people still look fondly upon the animated superhero movie as one of Pixar’s best. And like all superhero movies, you knew it was going to get a sequel! Considering Pixar’s success with sequels as well, you know this will be just as good as the original.
1. Avengers: Infinity War
This is what the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has been building up to. Every franchise, hero and villain was introduced in some way to build to this year’s Infinity War. This could be one of the most interesting blockbuster films ever made.
